As part of the final stages of J549's nine year restoration by the Victorian Goldfields Railway, several test runs are currently taking place. One such test run was on 20 November 2013 when J549 (still missing some fittings such as the smoke deflectors) double headed with coal burning classmate J515 on the regular services from Maldon to Castlemaine and return. This was also the first time J515 and J549 have double headed in the preservation era.
On both trains J515 lead J549 from Maldon to Castlemaine, while J549 lead J515 on the return trips. The video commences at Bendigo Rd and then features additional shots at Muckleford and Sawmill Rd. The return run of the first train is seen climbing away from Winters Flat, crossing the Muckleford Creek bridge and then rounding the curve at Shelbourne Junction.
At Maldon, the locos are coupled to the front of the train for the second trip to Castlemaine with additional shots near the 88 milepost, Muckleford and climbing through Maldon Junction. The return is seen departing Castlemaine, accelerating away from the Sawmill Rd bridge, departing Muckleford and arriving at Maldon.
The Victorian Goldfields Railway operates the former VR branch line from Castlemaine to Maldon in the central goldfields region of Victoria, Australia. The line is typical of many "pioneer branch lines" that were built around the country with light 60lb rails and heavy 1 in 40 grades.
The railway is operated by volunteers with steam trains operating on Sundays and Wednesdays throughout the year except on days of high fire danger. For more information please visit http://www.vgr.com.au
